A roll stamp is required to send roll-shaped items. This is available at a price of EUR 1.50 (VAT-exempt in accordance with VAT legislation) from all outlets and the DHL Shop.

Shipments which exceed the above maximum dimensions, are neither rectangular nor roll-shaped, or are not in a solid cardboard box are classed as bulky goods.

Max. combined length and girth (L + 2xW + 2xH) for DHL Paket items up to 10 kg: 300 cm.

The following contents are not permitted (also refer to the General Terms and Conditions for DHL Paket/ Express National):

• Shipments whose content, external form, transport or storage is banned by law or regulation or, where no corresponding special agreement has been concluded, requires special equipment, safety precautions or approvals;
• Shipments whose content or external characteristics could cause injury, infection or material damage;
• Shipments containing live animals, animal carcases or parts thereof, human body parts, or human remains; this does not include urns or, subject to certain conditions, invertebrates and medical or biological material for analysis;
• Shipments, the transport and/ or storage of which is subject to hazardous goods regulations;
• Shipments with a gross value in excess of EUR 25,000;
  
• Shipments containing money, precious metals, jewellery, watches, precious stones, objets d'art, antiquities, rarities or other precious items, cheque cards, credit cards, valid stamps, valid phone cards, or other securities or means of payment which cannot be blocked, rendered worthless or replaced if damaged, with a total value in excess of EUR 500. For these items (referred to a class II valuables), delivery is limited to EUR 500 worth per recipient per day, even if items are sent in multiple shipments. For more information click here.

• If your parcel exceeds the maximum size stated, you will need to send it with the bulky goods service. This service is for items up to 200 cm long with a combined length and girth (i.e. length plus 2 x width plus 2 x height) of up to 360 cm. The maximum weight is 31.5 kg. Roll-shaped items that weigh more than 5 kg (max. 31.5 kg) or exceed the maximum roll dimensions may be sent with the bulky goods service if they do not exceed 200 cm in length and 60 cm in diameter and the length plus measured circumference does not exceed 360 cm.
• Shipments of up to 4 m³ weighing up to 100 kg can be shipped with DHL MAXITRANSPORT. For more information click here.

The following services may be combined with DHL PÄCKCHEN:

• Proof of delivery: In the event of loss or damage, DHL offers liability up to EUR 25. You also have the option of shipment tracking. The proof of delivery service is exclusively available with DHL Online franking for EUR 1.

The following services can be combined with DHL PAKET:

Standard services:

• GoGreen: For climate-friendly shipping you can request the GOGREEN service for your DHL PAKET with DHL Online franking. More information about the GoGreen initiative.
• Cash on delivery: The parcel is only handed over to the recipient on payment of the cash on delivery amount and the money is transferred to the sender.
• Transport insurance: Insurance against loss or damage up to a total of EUR 2,500 or EUR 25,000 per DHL PAKET (material damage, no financial or consequential damage - see also the General Terms and Conditions for DHL PAKET/ EXPRESS National and the Transport insurance brochure).
• Advice of delivery: Shipments which exceed the maximum dimensions for a parcel, are neither rectangular nor oval-shaped, or are not in a solid cardboard box are classed as bulky goods.
• Bulky goods: Shipments which exceed the maximum dimensions for a parcel, are neither rectangular nor oval-shaped, or are not in a solid cardboard box are classed as bulky goods.
• Roll: A roll stamp is required to send roll-shaped items.
• Postage not paid: The recipient pays the costs of shipping. However, if the recipient fails to pay the amount in full, the sender is obliged to meet the costs.

Why am I unable to book the GoGreen service for CO₂-neutral shipping any more for national Päckchen and Paket items?

• From 01.07.2011, Päckchen and Paket items that are sent by non-business customers within Germany are transported with zero CO₂ by DHL Paket (without any surcharge to the customer!).
  
• The CO₂ emissions produced during transport are offset by investments in climate protection projects. More information on the projects we support can be found at www.dhl.de/gogreen.
  
• The chargeable GOGREEN service that was previously bookable via DHL Online franking is now not necessary for Päckchen and Paket items sent within Germany, and is no longer bookable separately.
  

• The cash on delivery service enables the sender to ensure that the shipment is only handed over to the recipient on payment of the specified cash on delivery amount. The cash on delivery amount, which may not exceed EUR 3,500, will only be accepted in cash (except in the case of shipments for which notification has been received, which you can collect from an outlet - these may be paid for with an EC card). The maximum cash on delivery amount is EUR 3,500. For shipments dropped off at a Packstation, it is EUR 1,500. In the event of mistakes in the collection or transfer of the sum, DHL's liability is limited to the cash on delivery amount. If the recipient refuses to pay the amount, the parcel will be undeliverable and will be returned to the sender. In this case, the forwarding fee is not applied.
• To send your DHL Paket with the cash on delivery service, you must complete the DHL cash on delivery label with the amount to pay and your bank details. In addition to the Paketmarke, which is affixed in the top left field of the shipping form for shipments within Germany, the cash on delivery label should be affixed in the bottom right field. Remember to enter your bank details on the cash on delivery collection slip so the money can be transferred. The cash on delivery amount minus the forwarding fee of EUR 2 should be entered on the slip. Both the cash on delivery label and the collection slip for payment transfer are available from Deutsche Post and Postbank outlets. Drop off your prepared shipment at a Deutsche Post or Postbank outlet.

Bulky goods are parcels that

• if rectangular, exceed the parcel dimensions of 120 x 60 x 60 cm
• if roll-shaped, weigh more than 5 kg or exceed a length of 120 cm or a diameter of 15 cm
• are neither rectangular nor roll-shaped
• have protruding parts or are loosely tied or
• have no stable external packaging of corrugated cardboard, solid board or paper.

Luggage items are only considered to be bulky goods if they exceed the maximum dimensions of 120 x 60 x 60 cm. The packaging shape and material are irrelevant. Within a package size of 120 x 60 x 60 cm and a maximum package weight of 31.5 kg, luggage being sent anywhere in Germany should be franked with the DHL Paketmarke for goods up to 31.5 kg.

Tip: If your shipment exceeds the maximum weight of 31.5 kg and the maximum dimensions (length 200 cm, combined length and girth [length plus 2 x width plus 2 x height] of 360 cm), we recommend using DHL Maxitransport.

You can ship luggage items and suitcases weighing up to 31.5 kg with maximum dimensions of 120 x 60 x 60 cm with a DHL Paketmarke for up to 31.5 kg.

DHL Päckchenmarke and DHL Paketmarke are the "stamps" that we use for parcel shipping within Germany. You can obtain them from www.dhl-shop.de and by calling +49 (0)1805 345 22 55 (14 cent per minute or part thereof from a German landline; more than 42 cent per minute or part thereof from a German mobile network). Orders placed by telephone are delivered free of charge; minimum order value EUR 49.90. Alternatively, you can frank your parcels online using DHL Online franking.

The DHL Pluspäckchen is the handy combination of packaging, postage for items up to 10 kg and climate-neutral shipping within Germany. Pluspäckchen is available from the DHL Shop and Deutsche Post outlets.

DHL is the first and so far the only logistics company to bear the costs of the CO₂-neutral transport of Päckchen and Paket items sent by non-business customers within Germany.

DHL offsets the CO₂ emissions generated by transporting the items through investments in climate protection projects. This means that every non-business customer can make their contribution to protecting the environment and making it healthier.

Together with its customers, DHL is keen to use the opportunity to do something to fight climate change and to leave a legacy of a healthy environment for future generations. This is why DHL is not only making efforts to reduce its CO₂ emissions, but is also bearing the costs of offsetting the CO₂ emissions generated by its transport network within Germany through investments in various climate protection projects. • Proof of delivery: DHL PÄCKCHEN International with the proof of delivery service will only be handed to the recipient or someone authorised to receive the shipment anywhere in the world upon provision of a signature. In the event that your parcel is lost or damaged, DHL will compensate you with up to EUR 35.00 on production of your stamped deposit receipt. This service can be requested exclusively when you frank it via DHL Online franking.
• Sender's instructions: This ensures that your parcel will be returned to you if it cannot be delivered. This service is always free for DHL PÄCKCHEN International.
• Roll: The service for roll-shaped shipments. You will require a roll service stamp if you don't use an industrially manufactured transport tube.

The following services* may be combined with the DHL PAKET International:

• Premium (only Non-EU): International shipments are normally sent by land or sea. For preferential shipping (e.g. by airmail), you can use the Premium service. In addition, parcels sent with the Premium service are always covered by transport insurance up to EUR 500.
• International cash on delivery: The international cash on delivery service enables you to ensure that the recipient only receives the DHL Paket International after payment of the specified cash on delivery amount.
• International value: This service enables you to arrange increased insurance up to a specified value of max. EUR 5,000*.
• Bulky items: Use the bulky items service if your shipment exceeds the maximum dimensions.
• Sender's instructions: Before shipping, tell us whether your shipment is to be returned if it cannot be delivered in the destination country.
• Roll: The service for roll-shaped shipments weighing up to 5 kg. You will require a roll service stamp if you don't use an industrially manufactured transport tube.

Please note that you should also take into account the relevant customs regulations when sending parcels abroad.

To send DHL PAKET International and DHL PÄCKCHEN International items to non-EU countries you will require additional forms (customs declaration CN22 or CN23). These are included in the Päckchenschein or Paketschein.

DHL Päckchen International

For regular DHL Päckchen International shipments no liability is offered for damage or loss.

For Päckchen with the proof of delivery service, DHL will be liable in the event of loss or damage, upon production of a stamped deposit receipt, up to a goods value of EUR 35.00.

DHL Paket International (EU)

Your parcel is insured for up to EUR 500 against loss and damage.

DHL Paket International (worldwide)

In the event of loss or damage, DHL shall be liable for the material value of the contents* within the framework of legal liability set down by the conventions of the Universal Postal Union (UPU):

• 40 SDR (special drawing rights) per parcel plus 4.5 SDR per kilo
• 1 SDR = EUR 1,13138 (official conversion rate of the Universal Postal Union, as of 01.01.2012)

International parcels that are sent with the Premium service are insured up to a maximum sum of EUR 500.

* Must be proved with receipts and invoices.

If you want your DHL PÄCKCHEN International to be returned if undeliverable, please note this on the address side of the shipment in a language readily understood in the destination country.

German: "Bei Unzustellbarkeit zurück an Absender."
French: "En cas de non-remise renvoyer à l'expéditeur."
English: "If undeliverable return to sender."

If you do not write these sender’s instructions on the parcel, it will not be returned by the postal service in the destination country.

For DHL PAKET International please indicate on the Paketschein (under "Bei Unzustellbarkeit" / "If undeliverable") what should happen to your shipment. You can choose between "Rücksendung" / "Return" (the parcel is returned to you at your expense) and "Preisgabe" / "Abandon" (parcel is auctioned or destroyed in the destination country).

All shipments must be securely packed in accordance with the contents, shipping method and size. If an item is not suitably packed you will not be entitled to lodge any claims in the event of damage. You can hand in your franked shipments at the following locations (please note that not all DHL products can be dropped off at all locations):

You can arrange to have your shipments picked up either online or over the phone.

Online:

• With DHL Online franking you can frank and pay for parcels of up to 31.5 kg online. If required you can request pick-up for EUR 3 (incl. VAT) per basket. The pick-up service is free for four national deliveries or more. For EUR 6 (incl. VAT) per basket your shipments will be picked up within your chosen time window.
• If your shipments have already been franked with DHL Online franking or with a Paketmarke, you can arrange pick-up separately with a pick-up request.

Only a maximum of 20 shipments can be registered for each pick-up request.

With DHL pickup-sets you can arrange a pickup by phone. You receive your pickup-set for your order with the coupon code at the DHL Shop or call +49 (0) 1805/ 345 22 55 (14 cent per minute or part thereof from a German landline; more than 42 cent per minute or part thereof from a German mobile network). Orders placed by telephone are delivered free of charge; minimum order value EUR 49.90.

• Your shipment will be picked up on your requested date (the next working day at the earliest if requested before 7.30 p.m.) between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
• If you request pick-up via DHL Online franking and specify a time window, you can have your shipment picked up at a specific time (for orders placed before 2 p.m., your parcel will be picked up on the same day). You can choose between three time windows: 9 a.m. - 12 noon, 12 noon - 3.30 p.m., or 3.30 p.m. - 7.30 p.m.

Cancelling a pick-up via DHL Online franking:

If you have completed the payment process for the basket including pick-up, you can cancel the online pick-up by calling +49 (0)1805/ 345 22 55 (14 cent per minute or part thereof from a German landline; more than 42 cent per minute or part thereof from a German mobile network). You must cancel before 8 p.m. on the last working day before the pick-up date.

Cancelling a pick-up request with a Paketmarke:

You can cancel your request as long as the specified time window for pick-up has not yet begun. Requests placed by phone can only be cancelled by calling the hotline. Pick-ups arranged via the DHL Shop or eFiliale can also be cancelled online. You can cancel by clicking on the secure link in the confirmation E-mail. For this reason it is important to enter your E-mail address correctly. Registered customers can also select the "Cancel" link on the summary page for the DHL Paketmarke pick-up request.

With national shipping, Päckchen and Paket shipments are generally delivered to the recipient on the next working day. For international deliveries, the transport time depends on the destination country. For more information please go to the relevant country page.

For deliveries within Germany, parcels are delivered to the recipient in one to two days. For international deliveries, the transport time depends on the destination country. For more information please go to the relevant country page.

We regret that it is not possible to specify an exact day or time for delivery.

If the recipient is not at home, DHL will hand over the parcel to a spouse or other person authorised in writing by the recipient to take delivery at the specified address, in return for a confirmation of receipt. DHL Paket items can also be delivered to alternative recipients. Alternative recipients might be a relative of the recipient or his/her spouse, a colleague, employee or neighbour, if it can be assumed from the circumstances that they are entitled to take delivery of the shipment. If the DHL PAKET cannot be delivered to either the recipient or an alternative recipient, the recipient will receive a notification card with which he/she can collect the shipment from the stated outlet within 7 days on presentation of valid ID or arrange redelivery. If the DHL PAKET is not collected within this period or if a second attempt to deliver also fails, the parcel will be undeliverable and will be returned to the sender. If you are not at home when a DHL employee calls to pick up a franked shipment, you must place another pick-up request. Alternatively you can drop off your shipment at a Deutsche Post outlet or a Packstation.

Tip: If collecting parcels from a outlet is inconvenient, you can use the nationwide network of over 2,500 Packstations where you can collect, frank and send parcels 24 hours a day.

If your shipment has not been delivered within the expected timeframe, we would firstly recommend checking its status online at www.dhl.de/sendungsverfolgung or by calling +49 (0)1805 / 345 22 55 (14 Cents per minute or part thereof from a German landline; more than 42 Cents per minute or part thereof from a German mobile network.). To find a shipment all you need is the shipment code of your DHL Paket and the postcode of the recipient. If no information is available on the status of the shipment, please contact the customer service team on the number provided. Alternatively, six days after dropping off the parcel you can fill in an online search request.

DHL Paket International:

If the recipient will not accept your DHL parcel, you can decide using the sender's instructions service what is to happen to your shipment.

Before shipping, specify what is to happen if your shipment cannot be delivered in the destination country. To do this, please tick the sender's instructions directly on the shipping form/Paketmarke for your DHL PAKET International:

a) Return to sender (Renvoyer à l'expéditeur)

If your DHL PAKET International cannot be delivered to the recipient in the destination country, it will be returned to you. The type of return transport is determined by the postal company in the recipient country:

• Return via road transport: EUR 10.00 (generally used for return deliveries from European countries)
• Return via air transport: EUR 20.00 (generally used for return deliveries from non-European countries)

The fee is only levied if your DHL PAKET International is actually returned.

b) Abandon (Traiter comme abandonné)

If your DHL PAKET International cannot be delivered, it will not be returned to you. Instead, the postal company of the recipient country will auction it or dispose of it. You will not incur any additional costs.

DHL Päckchen International:

The sender's instructions service is free for DHL PÄCKCHEN International.

You can check the status of your parcel online at www.dhl.de/sendungsverfolgung or by calling +49 (0)1805 / 345 22 55 (14 cent per minute or part thereof from a German landline; more than 42 cent per minute or part thereof from a German mobile network). To find a shipment all you need is the shipment number of your DHL Paket and the postcode of the recipient. Please note that not all international shipments can be tracked all the way to their final destination as other postal services do not always provide DHL with all the necessary data. To find out in which countries complete shipment tracking is available, please refer to the country information.

The shipment number is a 10- to 39-digit number on the parcel label. You can see the exact position of the shipment number on DHL shipments here.

The DHL online franking service is a quick, easy and economical way to frank and pay for national and international parcels online. You can create your own shipping labels (Paketmarke or Päckchenmarke) easily in your web browser.

National:

In the event of your parcel being lost or damaged, DHL offers liability of up to EUR 500 for direct damage (loss in value) incurred, on presentation of the acknowledged deposit receipt. For particularly valuable items you can also arrange for transport insurance up to EUR 2500 or EUR 25,000. Liability of up to EUR 25 is offered for Päckchen items with the proof of delivery service.

International:

DHL Paket International

In the event of loss or damage, liability is in accordance with the conventions of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Depending on the weight of the shipment, the maximum compensation available is 40 special drawing rights (SDR) per parcel plus 4.5 SDR per kg of weight (1 SDR = Euro 1.13138, as of 1/2012)), or the current maximum of EUR 205.63 for a maximum weight of 31,5 kg (as of 1/2012). If a DHL Paket International is sent with the Premium service, this also carries insurance in addition to priority shipping service of up to a maximum of EUR 500.

DHL Päckchen International

For regular DHL Päckchen International shipments no liability is offered for damage or loss.

For Päckchen with the proof of delivery service, DHL will be liable in the event of loss or damage, upon production of a stamped deposit receipt, up to a goods value of EUR 35.

If your shipment has not been delivered, or is damaged, you can complete a search request or damage notification from your PC.

If your parcel is lost you can also contact our customer service team on

If your parcel is damaged, please hand it in at a Deutsche Post or Postbank outlet where a damage notification form will be filled in.
