How international shipping works

Use the DHL Online Franking for sending your international shipments. You will be guided through the necessary steps conveniently. Thanks to the automatic mandatory field check, you can prevent errors.

  • 1. Is the content of your shipment permitted?

Some goods are considered dangerous goods for international shipping and may not be shipped. For example, lithium batteries and accumulators may not be sent abroad and must be removed from electronic devices before shipping. Common items such as perfume, spray cans, or nail polish are also classified as dangerous goods.

There are also restrictions on the allowable contents when shipping valuable items.

Certain products may not be imported into the destination country - please refer to the import regulations of the respective country.

  • 2. Is the parcel securely and properly packed?

Your international shipment is being sent on a long journey. To ensure that your packages and parcels arrive safely at the recipient, secure and proper packaging - inside and out - is essential. Please pay attention to our guidelines and tips for your packaging.

  • 3. Is your parcel appropriately franked?

Do you want to send your package with tracking and insurance? Then please choose DHL Paket International. Only with this product can we, if necessary, investigate abroad and take responsibility in case of loss or damage to the shipment.

Check whether the size and weight requirements are met and consider whether you need an additional service, such as for bulky items, or transport insurance for particularly valuable content.

National parcel labels are not suitable for international shipments. If an international shipment is underpaid (for example, if dimensions or weight are exceeded), this usually results in the return to the sender.

  • 4. Is the complete address attached to the shipment?

Always provide the complete recipient address on your shipment. The recipient's email address and phone number are also helpful, as this allows the recipient to be informed directly about the shipment. Please ensure that you have the recipient's consent for sharing their data and printing it on the shipping label.

A valid German sender address is also important in case the shipment cannot be delivered abroad and needs to be returned.

  • 5. Is all customs information for your shipment to a non-EU country available?

Are you shipping to a country outside the EU or to a so-called EU exception area, such as the Canary Islands? Then a customs declaration (form CN 22/CN 23) must always be completed.

Filling it out is quite simple if you keep the following in mind for the declaration:

    • The customs declaration must be completed in a language approved for the destination country.
    • It must be clearly legible in block letters and in Latin characters. Other scripts, such as Cyrillic or Arabic, cannot be read.
    • It must be accurate and complete, especially the information about the contents of the shipment and the value of the goods.

The easiest way to fill out the customs declaration is through the DHL Online Franking. You will be guided step by step through the process.
