What is Live-Tracking?
DHL Live-Tracking allows you to track your shipment on a live map on the day of delivery and informs you when your shipment will be delivered to your home address.
If Live-Tracking is available for your shipment, the following information will be displayed after you have entered your zip code:
- Delivery time window of 90 minutes
- Countdown of the remaining stops until delivery
- Map with recipient address and current position of the delivery vehicle
You can access Live-Tracking in the DHL shipment tracking at dhl.de or in the Post & DHL App by entering your shipment number.
Note: Please note that live tracking does not provide information about the complete route of your shipment and is only available on the day of delivery.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why is live tracking not displayed to me even though I received an email with a link to live tracking?
In principle, we offer live tracking whenever we can be reasonably certain that we can meet the displayed information regarding delivery time and delivery stops.
It is possible that we announce live tracking to you by email in the morning and display it early in the day. However, during the delivery route, unforeseen events (e.g., unexpectedly heavy traffic or bad weather) may occur, forcing us to deactivate live tracking later in the day because we can no longer guarantee that we can keep to the planned route.
In addition, there are several other reasons why live tracking may not be displayed:
- Your shipment has already been delivered.
- You were not at home, and your shipment is ready for pickup at a post office, parcel shop, or Packstation.
- Delivery had to be interrupted unexpectedly and can only continue the next day.
- A technical error occurred. In this case, you will see an error message.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why is live tracking not available everywhere?
In principle, we offer live tracking whenever we can be reasonably certain that we can meet the displayed information regarding delivery time and delivery stops.
Especially in urban areas, due to daily changing delivery addresses, varying routes, and highly fluctuating shipment volumes, our forecast for delivery time and stops cannot always be accurate. If we detect a certain level of uncertainty, it may happen that, even in areas where we generally provide live tracking, it is not displayed for every shipment.
However, we are working intensively to improve our processes so that we can offer reliable live tracking for as many shipments as possible.
In addition, for operational reasons, live tracking unfortunately cannot yet be offered in all regions of Germany (e.g., not yet on islands).
Thank you for your feedback.
I didn’t receive a link for live tracking, or not for all of my shipments. What could be the reason?
The fact that live tracking is not available or not for all of your shipments can have the following reasons:
1.) Your shipment belongs to one of the following categories:
- DHL Päckchen
- Shipments addressed to a branch or Packstation
For these shipments, live tracking is not provided.
2.) We only display a live tracking delivery time window when we can meet it with a high degree of certainty. This may not always be possible for individual shipments, especially in urban areas. However, we are working intensively to improve our processes so that we can offer reliable live tracking for as many shipments as possible.
Thank you for your feedback.
Is it a violation of the Data Protection Act if the locations of parcel delivery addresses are displayed?
When displaying live tracking, all legal requirements regarding postal secrecy and data protection are strictly observed.
The respective location is only visible to the authorized recipient. In addition, details cannot be identified due to the large scale of the map.
Thank you for your feedback.
Are my address details shared with Google?
No, the exact geo-coordinates of the recipient's address are not shared with Google.
Thank you for your feedback.
Do I need to be a registered DHL customer to get live tracking for my shipments?
No, live tracking is activated regardless of whether you have a DHL customer account or not. However, registering is beneficial because on the morning of delivery you will receive an email with the estimated delivery time window and a link to live tracking. You can register here for free to stay informed at all times.
Thank you for your feedback.
Where can I find out if live tracking is available for my parcel?
If we have your email address (e.g., as a registered DHL customer), you will be informed by email on the morning of delivery. If you have downloaded and installed the Post & DHL app and enabled notifications, you will also receive a push notification to track your shipment live.
Thank you for your feedback.
How can I make sure that I’m informed about a live tracking shipment?
If a shipment with live tracking is on its way to you, you will be informed on the morning of delivery. The notification will be sent via email or through the Post & DHL app, provided we have your contact details. Having a DHL customer account is beneficial, as we can send you the estimated delivery time window and the link to live tracking via your registered email address. You can register for free here.
Thank you for your feedback.
Can I deactivate live tracking?
No, unfortunately live tracking cannot be deactivated. If live tracking is available for your shipment and you provided your contact details when placing the order, you will receive a link to track it live.
Thank you for your feedback.
Does live tracking cost anything?
No, the live tracking service is free of charge for you.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why doesn’t the delivery vehicle move on the map?
There can be several reasons why the vehicle remains in the same position for an extended period:
- The position of the delivery vehicle can be manually updated every 60 seconds. Between updates, the movement of the vehicle is not shown on the map.
- The driver may need to make a longer stop to deliver multiple shipments to one address with different recipients.
- In densely populated areas, such as city centers, the driver may not move the vehicle after every stop because they can reach several recipients from one parking position.
- The driver is taking a break.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why does the countdown jump or not change at all?
There can be several reasons why the countdown does not change or seems inconsistent over a longer period of time:
- The countdown can be manually updated every 60 seconds. Between updates, the new countdown is not displayed.
- The countdown is shown in steps of 10 as long as more than 10 delivery stops remain. For example, the display remains the same between 31 and 40 delivery stops: “A little more than 30 delivery stops left.” Only for the last 10 stops is each individual stop shown.
- The delivery driver makes a longer stop to deliver multiple shipments to one address with different recipients.
- The delivery driver takes a break.
- The delivery driver has to take a different route than planned for operational or traffic-related reasons.
- In areas where the delivery driver delivers both parcels and letters, the countdown only shows delivery stops for parcels. Stops for letters are currently not taken into account.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why doesn’t the vehicle’s position on the map reflect its real location?
For data protection reasons and to ensure the safety of our delivery staff, we only provide an approximate position of the delivery vehicle. However, the displayed location is accurate enough to give a good estimate of the vehicle’s distance from the recipient’s address.
Additionally, a vehicle shown near the recipient’s address does not necessarily mean that your address is the next delivery stop.
Thank you for your feedback.
Live tracking is currently not available for this shipment. What does that mean?
This message is displayed in the following cases, among others:
- We had to deactivate live tracking for your shipment. During the delivery tour, unforeseen events (e.g., unexpectedly heavy traffic or bad weather) may occur, which can force us to disable live tracking during the day because we can no longer guarantee that we will stick to the planned delivery route. This means that we might announce live tracking in the morning via email, and it may be visible early in the day, but later it is no longer available.
- A technical error has occurred.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why is the delivery time window shown in live tracking not being met?
The 90-minute delivery time window shown in live tracking is an estimated delivery time. This means that, based on numerous forecasts and our experience, we expect your shipment will likely be delivered during this period.
Unfortunately, our prediction for the delivery time and stops cannot always be met due to unforeseen events.
Especially in urban areas, the delivery route may change due to factors such as daily changing addresses, varying routes, fluctuating shipment volumes, or unexpectedly heavy traffic, and the indicated time window cannot always be maintained.
Please understand that direct contact with our delivery driver or speeding up your shipment through customer service is not possible.
Thank you for your feedback.
Why do I need to enter my postal code to track my shipment live?
Providing your postal code helps us identify you as the recipient of the shipment. This ensures that no unauthorized person can access information about your deliveries.
Thank you for your feedback.
