Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is currently the only scalable option for reducing carbon emissions in aviation, and it's already in use in our air network.
Two landmark collaborations signed by DHL Express with bp and Neste in 2022 are expected to save some two million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over the aviation fuel cycle - equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 400,000 passenger cars. This brings us a major step closer to our commitment of using 30% SAF mixtures in all our aviation by 2030.
DHL Express provides you with a CO2 report that enables you to gain full transparency over carbon emissions from your express shipping. As a business customer, you can request the report from your sales representative (DHL Express account number required).
When booking an international express shipment with air transport, you can optionally add the GoGreen Plus* service to your shipment in our online shipping system MyDHL+. If you are interested in booking GoGreen Plus* as a standard service for all your international express shipments sent by air, contractual arrangements are available. Please contact your sales representative.
With our previous GoGreen service, which expired on December 31, 2023, emissions produced in transport were compensated for through high-value climate protection projects in developing countries worldwide - which means that emissions could only be indirectly compensated for through offsetting. Our new GoGreen Plus* service directly reduces carbon emissions. We use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in our DHL Express air network (insetting) and thus help our customers directly avoid Scope 3 emissions. GoGreen Plus* is currently only available for air freight shipments (TDI).
Although SAF is not yet available at all of our airports, we can offer GoGreen Plus* International for all TDI shipments worldwide, using the Book & Claim system. Book & Claim is based on the one-atmosphere, global emissions and global reductions approach. It makes no difference whether the aircraft used to transport a GoGreen Plus* shipment has SAF in its tank. What counts is that the calculated quantity of SAF is actually used within our aviation network, thereby effecting a significant reduction in carbon emissions that can be directly attributed to the customer.
*GoGreen Plus is a value-added service to a Deutsche Post and DHL shipment contributing to decarbonization measures within Deutsche Post and DHL's logistics network. By using alternative fuels and technologies, Deutsche Post and DHL reduces the usage of fossil fuels in the mode of transport and in buildings used for GoGreen Plus shipments. This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported with vehicles or handled via facilities using these fuels or technologies.
